Bodily autonomy, including the right to abortion, is a necessary component of full citizenship and essential to a fully functioning democracy. This session seeks to explore a range of ways in which advocates are working to secure bodily autonomy and reproductive health, rights, and justice as part of the effort to build and protect an inclusive democracy. First, the panel will explore recent and current “direct democracy” efforts to secure reproductive rights, including restoring and enshrining abortion rights through state constitutional ballot initiatives. Second, the panel will explore efforts to deeply engage communities most impacted by reproductive rights violations and ensure their participation in the democratic process, through strategies including organizing, civic engagement, and culture change. And third, the panel will examine efforts to counter the criminalization of pregnancy and pregnancy outcomes, which threatens democracy both in the United States and in countries with rising authoritarianism and polarization around the world. By focusing on efforts that integrate campaigns to strengthen democracy with efforts to advance reproductive health, rights, and justice, this session will amplify attention to the ways in which bodily autonomy, including the right to abortion, is an essential pillar of a robust and inclusive democracy.
