Asian American and Pacific Islanders are the fastest growing racial group in the country—and our political engagement is growing even faster. In the 2020 elections, AAPIs demonstrated the largest growth in voter turnout among all racial groups, up 39% from the 2016 election. Strikingly, almost a quarter of these were first-time voters. In states where the Presidential election was decided by margins measured in the thousands, AAPIs have become a critical and sought-after constituency. The AAPI Civic Engagement Fund commissioned several, first-ever research projects that have the potential to elevate the voter engagement work for AAPI organizations. Key topics include: How do you combat anti-China rhetoric from candidates from both parties, so pervasive in states ranging from Michigan to Ohio to Georgia to Arizona and which has had a harmful impact on AAPI communities? How do you fine-tune messaging to different AAPI ethnicities, where the spectrum of opinion may be broad with variations in gender, age, language, and geography? What are innovations in ethnicity identification within AAPI voter data that can also be applied for other racial populations?
