Description
Kentucky is one of three states where citizens who have been previously incarcerated are not guaranteed the right to vote and currently nearly 200,000 Kentuckians are barred from voting. In early 2023, the Commonwealth Alliance Donor Table hyper-focused its investing on this issue through the lens of one strategy: invest in the leaders and base closest to the problem. This led to the creation of Advocacy Based on Lived Experience (ABLE) - a new power-building nonprofit led by and for Kentuckians who have been incarcerated, their families and those in recovery. In one year, ABLE has redefined organizing on this issue and is making sure directly-impacted Kentuckians have a seat at the decision making table.
