While we experience the backlash against Reconstruction and the Civil Rights Movement, the new American majority – Black, Latiné, immigrant, and working-class communities – continue to experience higher rates of poverty, housing instability, lack of access to healthcare, police violence, incarceration, and the devastating impacts of climate change. To meet this moment, power building organizations are doubling down on strategic base building, identifying the spaces and places where each door knocked, each conversation had, and each leader developed has the maximum impact on our ability to harness and wield the political power needed to affect the conditions that rule all of our lives for the better. Strategic base building also means that we are deploying our members and leaders in strategic ways, using tactics that honor and build on our members day to day experiences, networks, and relationships. Learn how grassroots power building organizations are using new tools and tactics to model the concept of strategic base building to redraw the lines of power and strengthen the civic power of Black, Latine, immigrant and working-class communities in advance of the next census and redistricting.
