Democracies across the world are under attack as far right movements and politicians gain power. A core strategy of authoritarians is to play on fears of demographic and cultural change and to scapegoat immigrants, with dangerous consequences for American democracy and movements for justice. In the lead up to the 2024 elections, increased levels of migration due to climate change and other global conditions create fertile ground for the far right to create a sense of scarcity and chaos and drive an “us versus them” narrative. Their success in eroding support for migration, dehumanizing and vilifying people seeking safety and opportunity, threatens not only immigration priorities but also fair elections, racial justice, climate justice, and other progressive goals. The speakers in this session will describe this growing challenge and its implications, how funders can invest in the power and leadership of communities that seek to strengthen and expand the pro-democracy movement through intersectional organizing, and strategies for countering those who threaten the ideals of our inclusive, multiracial democracy.
