While the LGBTQ rights movement has been most visibly associated with the successful campaign to win marriage equality, the leadership and organizing to address the multiple challenges faced by trans communities of color have been severely under-resourced for decades. This has left the trans and queer movement infrastructure ill-equipped to counter the current coordinated attacks against trans people. A highly organized white, Christian nationalist and patriarchal movement has effectively instrumentalized trans communities, particularly youth, to block access to bodily autonomy, abortion, and reproductive rights. These attacks are part of a broader authoritarian playbook that has been financed and cultivated for decades with the goal of eroding democracy itself. This session will provide participants with a deep understanding of how trans and queer people have been organizing at the intersections of gender justice, racial justice, and democracy to not only push back against white, Christian nationalist and patriarchal movements, but also to realize an affirmative vision of a vibrant, feminist, pro-trans, and multi-racial democracy. We will explore how a cross-section of funders concerned about democracy and social justice can collaborate and coordinate to ensure that trans communities of color have the resources they need to fully build and leverage their power and advance democracy.
